Daily Dose for June 9th, 2015

Good morning! It’s another beautiful, yet hot, day here in the DFW metro area.  It’s going to get up to 96 today so definitely another hot one. I can see 100+ temps in our near future. Being that this is Texas, I’m wondering how well a fall garden will go. I’m betting that will be a far better bet than trying to get things to grow in the full heat of the summer. It’s just too darn hot for all that. I’m absolutely itching at the chance to get over to the new apartment and plan out my balcony garden oasis. On that note, it’s time to check Amazon.com to see what they have for us today.

Daily Dose for June 8th, 2015

Morning folks! It’s going to be a hot one today in DFW. It’s supposed to get up to 96 today. I don’t know about y’all, but that’s just too hot for me. I grew up in the north where we don’t have this hot of weather this early in the year. Unfortunately they’re going through a bit of a heatwave right now and it’s supposed to be about the same temps up there. *sigh* No relief in sight! All I can say is that I’d have a heck of a time going off grid in the south. I’m pretty sure I’d melt before I got anything actually done. This girl just doesn’t do heat. lol Funny thing is, I’ll happily go work in the garden in the evening or early morning. Something different about the garden, not sure what it is though.  On that note, time to check in with Amazon.com to see what they have for us today.

Daily Dose for June 7th, 2015

Morning-ish folks! Moving kinda slow this morning. It was a late night last night and got back up at 6am this morning so pretty tired yet.  Kiddos are happily playing with their toys and life is generally good.  We’ve been approved for our new apartment, so in mid-July we’ll be moving. It’s not far from where we are now, but a little better section of town and a bigger apartment. I’ll also have a balcony so I’m going to try my hand at container gardening. Not sure how well it’s going to go, but it’s worth a shot for sure.  Without further ado, it’s time to check Amazon.com for more great books!

Daily Dose for June 5th, 2015

Morning folks! Now that we’re finally not being rained on every day it’s starting to heat up here in Texas. While I’m all for some sunny days, this heat is for the birds. lol It’s so muggy out there with everything drying out that the humidity is just killing me. I’m from high desert and not accustomed to breathing water. I’d love for it to not get too hot like last summer, but I have a sneaky suspicion that I could be out of luck. Without further ado, let’s get on to the books from Amazon.com! Don’t forget to check out the deals from Amazon at the bottom.

Welcome back to the books!

Ok so I’ve basically decided to dive back into posting the books and other content on the site. Now the main thing you’ll notice is that there are a LOT fewer books. I’m going to cap my daily posting to 12. I’m not worried about any monetary compensation here, but I also can’t afford to spend a couple hours a day building the post either. So this seemed like a happy compromise.  I’ll also be adding new content to the page as well as far as articles of interest and such. I’ll no longer be promoting the page in different groups, but y’all are more than welcome to share it in them. In fact, please do. The more people that have access to the books, the more people are informed. An informed population is a protected population. Without further ado.. here we go. All books are gotten from Amazon.com.

Lament of a mom trying to return to work.

I’ve recently experienced a form of discrimination that I never thought possible. It has become increasingly obvious that taking time out of the workforce in order to raise my children has rendered me un-hireable. I never even considered this could possibly be an option. You see it on TV all the time. A mom that’s spent years raising her children returns to work with no problem. She makes a few phone calls, talks to a few people and BOOM right back to work. As with everything, TV tells a tale that reality cannot live up to.

All my life I’ve believed that it was a positive thing to be able to stay home with your children during their most formative years. To give them that access to a loving parent. Then, through choice or necessity, return to the workforce and provide for them. Well I did the first part, but now I’m finding the second to be extremely difficult.

Perhaps if I had a degree in something and had taken courses to keep up with the advances then I’d be a desirable hiring candidate. Maybe if I had a group of business contacts that could offer me a job in my field it’d be easy. I don’t. What I am seeing is that employers only focus on the 5 year gap in my employment history. No, I wasn’t going to school. No, I wasn’t in any kind of trouble. All I did was have the audacity to stay home with my children. Shame on me.

I’m not looking for any high powered position. I’m not looking for special or specific hours. All I’m doing is looking for a job that I know I’m qualified in because I’ve done it most of my working life. Let’s face it, you don’t need a degree to be a customer service representative. What you need is willingness, common sense, and a whole lot of patience. Anyone who has ever been around children knows that being a parent teaches a whole lot of that one.

This may seem like I’m whining about this, but I’m not. I’m questioning the methodology we use to determine who is worthy of work. I’m questioning why staying home with my children to give them a solid footing in life makes me less worthy of a job than the next person. Maybe working moms have it right. Maybe it’s better to keep working. At least they’re not sitting here 5 years latter putting in resume after resume and getting rejection after rejection. Some site my employment gap and some just give the generic “we’ve decided to go with a different candidate” approach, but it all ends the same. Try again.

I’ll keep trying. I’ll keep putting in application after application. I’ll get a job eventually. I just wish we’d re-examine our hiring practices for entry level type positions. Instead of making things more difficult on parents returning to the workforce, how about we give them credit for the skills they have gained. Multitasking, appointment setting, scheduling, time management and patience… so much patience. It’s a change that needs to happen, and I hope that hiring managers start seeing the worth of these prospective employees.

A Tearful Goodbye

This is the saddest post I’ll ever do, and also the last. I was getting a small amount of money from Amazon as an advertising fee. They decided today to take that away from me. Instead of paying  the $351 they said I’d earned, they instead took it, saying that it’s because I offer a free service. I’m heartbroken. This isn’t about the money, though as a single mom, that sure helped. This was about the pride in myself for doing something I loved and turning it into an income source. This was about making my own independence from my ex. This was a huge source of pride for me and now I’m broken, laid bare, torn asunder. My heart is more broken than any person could have done. Good luck to you all. I will truly and completely miss this.

Decolia.

Good morning folks! Looks like the rain has finally stopped here in the Metro so that’s good. In fact, looking at the weather forecast, it looks like we may actually have sunny skies for the rest of the week. That’d be nice. Maybe the mud bog outside my front door will actually have a chance to dry out a bit. I’m also hoping that the kids are finally on the mend. Seems like someone in the house has been sick for ages now! From what I’ve heard, it’s pretty much going around everywhere, but it sure liked to hang around here! Doesn’t help that allergy season has arrived with a vengeance there too. On that note, it’s time to check out Amazon.com to see what fun stuff they have for us today.

Good morning folks! Chilly-ish day here in the DFW metro area. It’s only supposed to get up to 60 degrees. Now, I realize that’s not exactly cold, but considering we’ve been in the 80’s lately, that’s quite a cool off. Looks like today should be the last of the rain too. We’ll see. The weather forecast changes fast here in Texas. I swear I’ve checked it in the morning and it was supposed to be sunny, then looked later in the afternoon and storms were set for half the week. I sure wouldn’t want that job. Anyway, time to check Amazon.com for some new inspiration.

Good morning folks! Whew! Crazy weekend we had here between storms, over-tired kids, and having the house treated it has been crazy busy. Pretty bad when you look forward to Monday for things to come back to normal right? Looks like we’re gonna get slammed by some more storms this afternoon. As long as it doesn’t get too nasty it’s ok. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Texas this green. All the rain has really perked the vegetation up nicely. Hopefully we can get out of these drought conditions, but I’ve heard that it’s not going to happen. We’ll see right? On that note, time to see what we can find on Amazon.com today!
