My Recommendations for February 28th, 2015

Good morning folks! It’s the last day of February and boy what a ride it’s been! We’ve had 80 degree days and now there’s snow on the ground. Actually there’s a couple of inches of snow on the ground. My kiddo’s loved it though and that’s the part that really matters. Watching them play and run around in it made standing out in the freezing snow totally worth it. The laughter of a child is precious and I adore it. When we came in I made some hot cocoa and gave them each a bowl of Keilbasa Potato and Cabbage soup. Click HERE for the recipe. For now, lets check out Amazon.com and see if they have any more wintry inspiration.

My Recommendations for February 27th, 2015

Good morning  folks! Running a little late today, but the kiddos actually slept in a bit. Since they’re usually my alarm clock, that means I slept in a bit too. That part was soooo nice.  Pretty chilly today and only supposed to get up to 32, so yeah, not anywhere near spring-like. I swear just a week or so ago we were getting up to the 70’s. We even have an 80% chance of snow today. It’s crazy, we normally get this type of weather in early January, not late February. Hopefully I can find us some good books to warm us up today on Amazon.com, so let’s find out. These selections are free at time of posting. Self-Seeding Crops You’ll Never Need to Replant

Great information about Self-Seeding crops. Why buy new seeds every year when they can seed themselves? It’s better for your wallet and also a great gift idea for friends and family!

freedomfarmtv

Some crop plants are self-seeding. With a bit of light management each generation can be coaxed into providing seeds season after season.
August/September 2010
Letting crops flower and go to seed also supports beneficial insects!

ILLUSTRATION: ELAYNE SEARS

One of the characteristics of a truly sustainable garden is that it produces at least some of its own seed. This is most often done when gardeners select, harvest and store seeds until the proper time for planting the following year. But some self-seeding crops produce seeds so readily that as long as you give them time to flower and mature, and set seed, you will always have free plants growing in your garden. You can simply let the seeds fall where they are, or toss pieces of the seed heads into the corners of your garden, or whichever area you want them in — no harvesting, storing…

Good morning folks! Chilly start for the day here in DFW. Looks like we’ve got a 50% chance to get a light skiff of snow today. It won’t last though or effect the roads. This has been one weird winter. I’m hoping this means a mild summer, but I’m betting my hopes are going to fall on deaf ears there. This last summer was pretty nice so I probably won’t get that lucky twice. Hopefully Spring is around the corner so we’ll get some warmer weather soon. On that note, lets see what Amazon.com has today.

How To Build A Simple Aquaponics System

Great information here about building an aquaponics system!

Experiments In Aquaponics

Full Diagram

A Basic Guide To Building Your Own Aquaponics System (Click Image To Enlarge)

Aquaponics is a technique enabling the sustainable production of edible fish and plants in a re-circulating system. Fish waste acts as a natural fertiliser, the plants absorb these nutrients, and the water remains clean and stable for fish. The only input is food for the fish.

Water from the fish tank is pumped into the grow beds and solid waste is removed by the addition of filter media at the water exit points. The water then travels through the plant grow beds where plants uptake the nutrients, and the water returns, purified, to the fish tank. The grow beds become a natural biofilter for bacteria to convert fish waste into accessible nutrients for plants.

The Biological Components of Aquaponics: The Nitrification Process (See Top Diagram)

The process of nitrification prevents the water from becoming toxic with harmful…

Good morning folks! Early morning here in the big D, they say snow is supposed to be falling, but right now it’s all rain. We’ll see if it ever transfers over to snow or not.  Most of DFW has been shut down the last couple of days due to ice, so a couple inches of snow don’t seem like a big deal anymore to folks, especially since it’s supposed to get warm enough to melt any that falls today. I’m glad things are finally getting back to normal around here, folks in the south just aren’t prepared for snow days. On that note, let’s check Amazon.com for some great ebook deals!

Good morning folks! Another icy day here in DFW.  We’re actually supposed to get 1-4 inches of snow tomorrow. That’s crazy so late in the year. As you may have noticed, I’ve changed the website around a bit again. I just thought this might be a bit better for you folks that access my site via pc. Not so much scrolling just to get past the header this way. Anyway, let’s check out Amazon.com to see if they have anything to warm us all up!

My Recommendations for February 23rd, 2015

Good morning folks! We got hit by a wintry mix last night. The roads are horrible and sections are shut down. Luckily I do all my grocery shopping for the week on Sunday so we’re set. Other folks, not so much. This, folks, is a good reason to prep, even if it’s just for bad weather. Because this is the south, we don’t really keep enough road equipment on hand to be very effective so there’s a good chance that everything will be closed down tomorrow too.Tonight though, I think we’ll cook up a big pot of chili. For now, let’s head over to Amazon.com to see what they have for us today.
